Have fun being a part of science!
Save wildlife and wild places

The City Nature Challenge is a worldwide bio-blitz event created by iNaturalist in 2016 to celebrate community science and outdoor recreation. With more than 500 cities participating from around the globe, this is one of the largest community science events in the world!

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to forget the many ecosystems that surround us. But what if there was a way to reconnect with nature, right in the heart of our communities? West Michigan City Nature Challenge is here to offer that opportunity through the app, iNaturalist

Imagine yourself stepping outside your front door, armed with nothing but curiosity and a smartphone. As you wander through parks, along sidewalks, and through green spaces, you become a community scientist, contributing valuable data to a worldwide effort to understand and protect our natural world. All you have to do is follow the steps below on how to participate, and you too can be a part of saving wildlife and wild places!

What is a bio-blitz?

A bio-blitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time.

  1. Download iNaturalist and start taking photos of wildlife (plants, animals, fungi) in Allegan, Barry, Kent, and Ottawa counties
  2. Join the “City Nature Challenge 2024: West Michigan” project on iNaturalist
  3. Tell 3 people in your life about the City Nature Challenge and invite them to participate!

You can participate by using iNaturalist anywhere in the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Kent and Ottawa. Meaning you can participate and explore from your own backyard!

The reach of City Nature Challenge is global! Over 500 cities around the world are participating, and last year ~66,000 individual people participated.

Every participant provides an opportunity for new observations of all kinds of species found in west Michigan. This could be hundreds, even thousands of new observations! We also hope to encourage you and everyone in our community to get more involved in community science.
